José Serrano

José Serrano Simeón (14 October 1873 – 8 March 1941) was a Spanish composer of zarzuelas. He was born in Sueca, Valencia, Spain. His most famous works include La dolorosa ("Lady of the Sorrows") and La canción del olvido ("The Song of Forgetting"). Serrano’s output mainly consists of popular, one-act zarzuelas, many filled with strong, dramatic and emotional situations. He is considered to be the musical heir of Federico Chueca; and the influence of Giacomo Puccini and Italian verismo is evident in many of his works. Serrano died in Madrid aged 67.

Kalervo Tuukkanen (14 October 1909 – 12 July 1979) was a Finnish composer. He was born in Mikkeli and died in Helsinki. In 1948 he won a silver medal in the art competitions of the Olympic Games for his Karhunpyynti ("Bear Hunt").His output consist of six symphonies and several other works.

Kaija Anneli Saariaho (Finnish: [ˈkɑi̯jɑ ˈsɑːriɑho]; née Laakkonen; 14 October 1952 – 2 June 2023) was a Finnish composer based in Paris, France. During the course of her career, Saariaho received commissions from the Lincoln Center for the Kronos Quartet and from IRCAM for the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the BBC, the New York Philharmonic, the Salzburg Music Festival, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, and the Finnish National Opera, among others. In a 2019 composers' poll by BBC Music Magazine, Saariaho was ranked the greatest living composer.Saariaho studied composition in Helsinki, Freiburg, and Paris, where she also lived since 1982. Her research at the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM) marked a turning point in her music away from strict serialism towards spectralism. Her characteristically rich, polyphonic textures are often created by combining live music and electronics.

Constantine Koukias (born 14 October 1965) is a Tasmanian composer and opera director of Greek ancestry based in Amsterdam, where he is known by his Greek name of Konstantin Koukias. He is the co-founder and artistic director of IHOS Music Theatre and Opera, which was established in 1990 in Tasmania's capital city, Hobart. Koukias's works range from large-scale music theatre and opera to mobile installation art events. His atmospheric compositions are characterised by mesmerising temporal, spatial and production designs, while his recent works exhibit eastern influences. His avant-garde approach to the presentation of opera has resulted in hybrid productions such as Days and Nights with Christ, To Traverse Water, Mikrovion, The Divine Kiss, Tesla – Lightning in His Hand and The Barbarians. His music theatre works include ICON, Kimisis – Falling Asleep, Borders, Orfeo, Rapture – Sonic Taxi Performance, Schwa – The Neutral Vowel, Antigone and The Da Ponte Project. Koukias was commissioned in 1993 by the Sydney Opera House Trust to compose the large-scale music theatre piece ICON to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House. His Incantation II for soprano and digital delay won the International Valentino Bucchi Vocal Prize in Rome in 1997, and in 2004 he was awarded a Sir Winston Churchill Fellowship.Prayer Bells, in which the composer draws on traditions of Latin, Hebrew and Byzantine chant, had its US premiere in 2010 at the Chicago Cultural Center.The Barbarians, which was commissioned by the Museum of Old and New Art and inspired by Constantine Cavafy's poem Waiting for the Barbarians, premiered in Hobart in 2012 as part of the MONA FOMA festival. Jan Martin Smørdal (born 14 October 1978 in Horten) is a Norwegian composer, arranger, producer and guitarist. Smørdal holds a master's degree in Jazz Performance, and composition from the Norwegian Academy of Music and has studied with Henrik Hellstenius and Lasse Thoresen.As a guitarist, Smørdal has contributed to a number of releases, both in band as well as solo settings, and has been a member of the live bands of Hanne Hukkelberg, Navyelectre and Rockettothesky (Jenny Hval). As a producer, Smørdal has worked with such performers and composers as Torgeir Vassvik, Rockettothesky, Nils Henrik Asheim and Siri Nilsen. Smørdal has contributed to a number of releases that have been bestowed with a Spellemannprisen Award.As a co-founder of Ensemble neoN, Smørdal has collaborated with performers and composers such as Oren Ambarchi, Marina Rosenfeld and Susanna Wallumrød. Smørdal has composed music for a variety of settings, ranging from solo to orchestra, installations and choir. His works have seen performances at the MATA Festival, the ISCM Festival in Vienna, the Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival and Nordic Music Days.
